🇺🇦 Remove Murderous Russia from of the UN Security Council — July 2024
Dear [Elected Representative],
I am writing to express my deep concern about Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine and its contradictory role within the United Nations Security Council. As you are aware, Russia currently holds the presidency of the Council, a position that carries immense responsibility for maintaining global peace and security. However, recent events have shown that Russia is not committed to these principles.
The bombing of the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv exemplifies Russia’s disregard for human life and international law. Civilians are under constant attack as a result of Putin’s unprovoked war on Ukraine, with daily casualties stemming from strikes on hospitals, schools, and family residences. The deliberate targeting of a children’s cancer hospital is particularly abhorrent. It is hypocritical and morally reprehensible for a nation to profess peace while waging an unprovoked war with cruise missiles and drone bombs.
The International Criminal Court has recognized the situation in Ukraine as a potential case of genocide, and warrants have been issued for top Russian officials, including Putin. Russia’s actions consistently undermine the very purpose of the Security Council!
In order to pursue its territorial ambitions in Ukraine, Russia is not only waging a war of terror but also leveraging its position on the Security Council to block all attempts to stop it. If we fail to address this issue, the UN risks becoming as ineffective as the League of Nations once was. Our international declarations of peace must be backed by concrete actions! As President Harry Truman stated on April 25, 1945, “If we do not want to die together in war, we must learn to live together in peace.”
Given these circumstances, I urge you to take the following steps:
- Initiate the Process: While removing a permanent member from the Security Council is challenging, we must explore all available mechanisms within the UN and hold a vote regardless of the outcome. The League of Nations faced similar dilemmas, and the UN was established to prevent such failures. We cannot allow the UN to become a hollow and discarded institution!
- Hold Russia Accountable: Elected representatives of all nations ( and elected representatives within the UN ) must ensure that Russia is held accountable for its actions. The Security Council presidency should not serve as a shield for aggression but restored as a platform for promoting peace ☮️
- Reassess Russian UNSC Membership: As a successor state to the USSR, Russia’s position on the Security Council was ‘inherited’ and never officially voted on. For example; Ukraine, also a successor state to the USSR, was not offered such a position. Reassessing this historical loophole might allow for the removal of Russia from the Security Council without Russia being able to veto its removal itself.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. The world is watching, and our commitment to peace must be unwavering.
Sincerely,
Seven Shurygin
